Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Sunderland, Vermont. Specializing in hair tests for both drugs and alcohol, we operate centers across all cities in the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. Our tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analyses.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse Experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation for their extensive detection window, up to 90 days, and because they are conducted under supervised conditions, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers an extended history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the developing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system. This process involves ensuring that the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry, if not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes the preliminary rapid drug abuse check. Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is governed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a maximum of 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: A hair drug test is quite challenging to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Shows consumption patterns: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting immediate use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sunderland, VT, hair follicle testing provides clear advantages over traditional urine tests. Its superior detection accuracy makes it a reliable choice for those looking for substantial evidence of substance use. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are taken under direct observation, minimizing the chance of tampering or cheating, which is paramount for ensuring integrity in testing results.

The durability of the hair test's detection window, extending up to 90 days, allows employers and authorities to obtain a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. This extended timeframe is a significant benefit over urine testing's limited window, offering a broader perspective on behavior patterns. With hair follicle testing, organizations achieve a more truthful assessment, enhancing policy compliance and workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
