Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Underhill, Vermont. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis with centers available in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for most cases. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

The method of drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals use hair follicle testing. The major advantage lies in its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, minimizing the chance for tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain crucial for identifying recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol exposure by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to around three months for substances. Its collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal volume for both screening and verification. To accommodate EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advisable. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By scalp hair, we mean only hair on the head, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical stages of laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's preliminary processing within the lab system. It involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry if not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for abusive substances. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumed positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples presumed positive in Screening, an additional portion of hair is utilized from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase entails extracting substances from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening confirmations are executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are meticulously washed prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike the shorter span with urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Displays historical patterns: It offers an overview of drug usage trends, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair materializes approximately 5 to 7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
