Located in Walden, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialized centers nationwide can assist, having locations in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is needed for testing. Options are available to analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a common technique for testing drugs. Businesses, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and reduced risk of tampering. However, for drug use detection in the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can track long-term drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers in the hair fibers as they grow. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, made up of approximately 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of hair. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in processing a drug test result at the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that are presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary validation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is pulled from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Fraud-resistant: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", they actually assess strands and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Walden, VT, hair follicle testing is emerging as the superior choice over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair tests boast a longer detection period, offering more reliable and accurate drug use data.

Enhanced detection accuracy is a key advantage of hair testing. It not only accurately detects substances over three months but also withstands attempts at sample tampering, unlike urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Walden, VT can benefit from hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window. Covering up to a 90-day period, this method provides a thorough overview of an individual's substance history.

The extensive timeframe that hair testing offers allows employers to make well-informed hiring and retention decisions. This comprehensive insight can prove invaluable for sustaining a safe workplace culture.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
