Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in West Burke, Vermont. When you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in this area, with facilities across cities nationwide ready to administer such tests. Generally, you’ll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or elsewhere on your body. Our hair analysis can detect substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG, with other customizable options available.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for substance screening. Organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor it over traditional urine tests. Utilized by employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationers, its major advantage is a prolonged detection timeframe, up to 90 days, through a monitored collection process that’s inherently tamper-proof. However, for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing still reigns supreme in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a strong mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a lengthy summary of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of its developing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will constitute 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is suggested for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we denote only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in laboratory processing of a drug analysis outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial procedure of integrating a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data requirements absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary quick assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug consumption in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to stand in a legal setting. Presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in different approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid); this is why hair drug checking remains the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug assessments can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, while urine assessments have a reduced timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are arduous to falsify, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: They offer a timeline of substance use over time, surpassing just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incidental use not detected: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation targets the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
