Comprehensive Hair Follicle Drug Testing Services in West Fairlee, Vermont: Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Our expertise is in hair testing with facilities available in every city nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. This method is suitable for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing services.

Increasing Preference for Hair Follicle Drug Tests: Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for detection purposes. Employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts often prefer this over urine tests. This is particularly true for employers with a strict no-drug policy. The main advantage is its ability to detect usage over a 90-day period. The test is hard to cheat and more accurate for recent use, although urine tests remain precise for up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers in the growing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount needed for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an identical quantity of body hair might be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps involved in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a basic rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs validation to be accepted in a legal setting. Any specimens that appear positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology available.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are tentatively positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Harder to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers a history: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It usually takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
