Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in West Haven, Vermont. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our organization is adept at hair testing, with facilities across various U.S. cities capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has grown. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer a hair drug examination over a typical urine test. Hair follicle drug assessments are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal settings, and individuals under probation. A key advantage is its extended drug detection window of around 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making it extremely difficult to manipulate. Yet, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical overview of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can supply about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, or testing above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial assimilation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process checks if the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a swift preliminary check for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in screening needs confirmation to stand in legal proceedings. Samples that screen as potentially positive require a subsequent confirmation.

In instances of a sample being possibly positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually bear higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
