Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in West Windsor, Vermont. Whether you require tests for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair testing with facilities across every city nationally that provide this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often require these tests over conventional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers use hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled from near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

To obtain an optimal sample for analysis, a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, suitable for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, equivalent body hair may be used. Note that "head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The core processes in lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails incorporating the sample into the lab’s system initially. It involves confirming the sample’s sealed and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary drug of abuse check. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction preparation. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced levels compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS is used for confirming any positive screening outcomes. As necessary, presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection period.
  • Prevention of manipulation: Hair drug testing is hard to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Traces usage patterns: It shows utilization patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drug traces appear in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Pricing: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle itself under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
