In Wheelock, Vermont, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, they specialize in hair assessments and have facilities in every major city across the nation to conduct such exams. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These hair assessments can screen for substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has surged. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for these over traditional urine analyses. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation commonly rely on hair tests. The primary advantage is the extended detection timeline, usually up to 90 days, which offers a closely monitored and cheat-proof process. However, for the detection of recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still reign supreme.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become a recognized method for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair can offer an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair may provide approximately a 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for examining and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The primary stages of processing a drug test outcome in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of registering a sample in a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a favorable screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

The confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Minimal risk of deception: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It allows tracking of substance use trends over time, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays tend to be more costly than other drug analysis methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variations like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
