Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Woodbury, Vermont. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with facilities across all cities nationwide that can conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly leaned towards the hair follicle approach in recent times. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, the legal system, and probationers. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection window for substance use, generally up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, and is exceptionally difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting very recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage within an approximate 3-month timeframe. It's easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of about 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Scalp hair specifically refers to hair on the head, whereas body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Overview

The laboratory examination of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about initially processing a sample within a lab's framework. This step confirms the sample's seal and proper handling, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry from an electronic tracking system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in many cases, a positive outcome requires verification for legal validity. Samples that result in a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Following a presumptively positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than through other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is determined using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing reveals drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection timelines.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is highly challenging, ensuring accurate outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drug presence in hair takes around 5-7 days before it becomes detectable.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigment and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
