In Alleghany, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair-based analysis, our nationwide centers can perform these tests, given that a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is present. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol, or be tailored for specific needs.

Increasingly, hair follicle analysis is preferred over traditional urine testing by employers, courts, and addiction specialists. Its advantages include a detection window up to 90 days and an observed collection process, making it tamper-evident. However, for immediate detection within five days, urine remains most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window for detecting substances like alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panel tests exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s recommended to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in laboratory processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning relates to the primary processing of a sample in a laboratory’s framework. This includes confirming the proper sealing and receipt of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive under Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methods.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to alter: It is exceedingly tough to compromise a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a drug use trend over time, not just short-term usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth rate can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
