Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Alton, Virginia. Whether a hair drug test or alcohol assessment is needed, we specialize in hair testing and have centers throughout every city Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent years, conducting drug tests via hair follicle sampling has grown more commonplace. Various establishments like employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly preferring hair tests to the standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with stringent no-drug policies, the courts, and those on probation due to their lengthier detection period—up to 90 days—and their collected, monitored process. Despite hair tests' effectiveness, urine tests remain optimal for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory system. This phase confirms that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplementary data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical strategy to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and validated to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Protracted detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It's exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other forms of drug testing.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair shade and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Alton, VA, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing with its unparalleled detection prowess. The benefits of hair testing over urine are clear as hair tests retain substance indicators over extended periods. Traditional urine tests often falter in accuracy past recent usage windows, while hair tests reliably capture older drug use. This longevity provides more comprehensive insights into an individual's habits and choices.

Comparatively, where urine tests may overlook substances after short durations, hair follicle tests maintain each instance for up to 90 days. This accurate historical perspective is invaluable, granting a broader view of an individual's exposure to substances well beyond the period typical urine tests can assess.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Alton, VA appreciate the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. Unlike other methods, hair tests effectively capture substance use for up to 90 days. This panoramic insight is crucial for capturing long-term drug patterns. Thus, hiring managers are empowered with a clearer perspective on an applicant's past, taking guesswork out of the equation and enabling informed decisions.

Companies find that the comprehensive temporal reach of hair follical tests extends well beyond typical windows. Many tests, such as urine assessments, focus on recent usage. However, with hair testing's ability to chronicle use months back, employers grasp a far-defined understanding of candidate histories.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Alton, VA, the integrity of hair follicle testing is renowned for being impervious to tampering. Hair samples significantly reduce concerns about sample corruption. The testing method's robustness lies in its resistance to typical adulteration tactics, offering a clear advantage in reliability. Consistent, unquestionable results come from this meticulous approach, ensuring authenticity is never in doubt.

Hair testing's distinct ability to maintain integrity amidst attempts at sabotage sets it apart. Many other methods face challenges in avoiding manipulation, yet hair follicle tests possess inherent safeguards that greatly minimize those risks. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
