Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Apple Grove, Virginia. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test using hair, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Hair samples, ideally 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body, can be examined for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair test solutions.

Lately, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle tests for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer this method over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal institutions, and probationers frequently utilize hair drug testing. The main advantage is a longer drug detection timeframe, covering up to 90 days, gathered under supervised conditions, making evasion nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strands. When collected near the scalp, it offers up to a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, about the width of a #2 pencil, should consist of approximately 200 strands, providing 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be insufficient, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step involves checking if the sample is sealed and shipped appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methodologies like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening a more complex process.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer a 90-day detection period, unlike urine tests with shorter durations.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over months, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
