Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Austinville, Virginia. For hair drug or alcohol analysis needs, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across the nation capable of administering hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, drug testing increasingly employs hair follicle analyses. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation members. The key advantage is a larger detection window for up to 90 days, with observed sample collection making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise when examining drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended retrospective view of alcohol and drug ingestion by capturing biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When taken from the scalp area, hair can present a detection period of nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to procure, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment with around 200 strands of hair (approximately comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for initial screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is advised to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. By scalp hair, we mean hair from the head only. Body hair consists of hair from other regions (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory step in processing a specimen into the lab’s framework. This process involves checking that the sample is secured and sent appropriately, creating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any other necessary data not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While an economical way to dismiss drug usage in the vast majority of samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for validity in legal contexts. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening are subject to secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a provisional positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at minimal concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with provisional positive results are thoroughly cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies historical usage patterns: It can outline a trend of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
