Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Axton, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing, along with a vast network of testing centers across various cities Nationwide, allows us to administer hair tests effectively. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either your head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more commonly used method for drug detection. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers benefit from the longer detection window of hair follicle tests, which tracks drug use for up to 90 days and involves a supervised collection process, rendering it nearly fraud-proof. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance use by embedding indicators within the strands as they grow. When the sample is obtained near the scalp, it can reveal around a three-month timeframe of alcohol and other drug intake. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is optimal for evaluation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg collection is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types such as facial, axillary, and so forth.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug testing encompasses four core procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the first handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This process entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and addressing any supplementary information not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly option to rule out drug use in the majority of samples, if a screen result is positive, it must be verified for courtroom proceedings. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting substances from hair at a significantly lower concentration than is usual with other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory chain from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more limited detection time.
  • Resistance to manipulation: A hair drug test is notably hard to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use across time, not merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incipient usage detection: There's a lag of about 5-7 days before drugs become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be costlier than alternative testing choices.
  • Outcome variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth characteristics can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand, not the subcutaneous follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
