Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug screening in Bassett, Virginia. When a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with centers nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, hair from the crown of the head or body hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches can be used. Hair analysis options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing choices.

In recent times, drug testing methods more often feature the hair follicle test. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests due to their effectiveness. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers utilize hair tests for their prolonged detection period, typically up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, hair tests resist tampering, though urine remains more accurate for detecting use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It offers a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence up to roughly three months prior. This method is easy to gather, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp should yield 100mg of hair, optimal for both initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, collect an equivalent quantity of body hair. Specifically, when mentioning head hair, we refer only to scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes checking the seal and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data recording not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be used in legal proceedings. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test as presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a lesser concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a more complex method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection time.
  • Hardiness against deceit: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage trends: This test can track a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics like color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites present.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Bassett, VA, hair follicle testing distinctly edges out traditional urine tests. Not only does hair testing provide a larger detection window, but it also delivers unparalleled reliability and accuracy, making it a superior choice for employers. By exceeding the capabilities of urine tests, hair follicle examinations ensure that drug use is thoroughly detected.

Benefits Over Urine Tests

  • Longer detection period
  • More difficult to bypass
  • Comprehensive substance history
These characteristics make hair testing a preferred choice for many institutions requiring robust drug detection protocols.

Extended Detection Window

In Bassett, VA, hair follicle testing's expansive detection window makes it a leading option for employers. Unlike other methods, it identifies substance use over the past 90 days, offering insights beyond current intoxication levels. This extended timeline is vital for understanding an individual's habitual use and ensuring a safe environment at work or in legal circumstances.

The 90-day Detection Period gives organizations a strategic advantage. By accessing a longer history of substance use, employers can make more informed decisions, helping maintain safe and productive workplaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
