Located in Bellamy, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our specialty lies in hair-based testing for drugs and alcohol, available at numerous testing facilities nationwide. To conduct the test, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol, or other substances according to specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a common method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer this over traditional urine tests. This method suits employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial requirements, and probation conditions. The key advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and high resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures an extended history of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary analyses, and/or testing above 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we're discussing scalp hair exclusively. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the laboratory is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admission. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as one of the most intricate methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which show a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is considerably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It conveys a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are notably pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variances such as hair color and differing individual hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand without involving the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Bellamy, VA? Accuracy of detection is a major reason. Hair tests offer a superior level of detection and reliability compared to urine tests. While urine tests are traditional, hair tests provide a broader window for detecting substance use and are difficult to manipulate. By adopting hair testing, employers and institutions receive a more complete picture of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Bellamy, VA, favor hair follicle testing for its extensive drug detection window. Unlike urine tests, hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, providing a thorough insight into an individual's substance history. This prolonged detection period enables employers to make more informed decisions regarding potential candidates and current employees, thereby enhancing workplace safety and compliance with drug policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bellamy, VA, hair follicle tests are resistant to tampering, greatly reducing the chances of sample interference. Due to its unique collection and processing methods, it is nearly impossible to adulterate or substitute a hair sample. This ensures that the results obtained are trustworthy and credible, making hair testing an ideal choice for organizations aiming to uphold integrity in their drug testing programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
