Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Benns Church, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we excel in hair testing. Our centers nationwide are equipped to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other purposes.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing increasingly involves the hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and for people on probation, offering longer detection reaching up to 90 days, ensuring supervised sample collection, and minimizing fraudulence. However, for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days, urine tests still lead in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying use of drugs and alcohol. By trapping biomarkers in the hair strand's growing fibers, hair provides a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair samples allow approximately a 90-day detection window for alcohol and drugs. This method is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of nearly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, the advised amount is 150mg. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types of hair (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process verifies sample sealing and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided by an e-chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is an economic method to rule out drug use in most samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for court admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirming any positive screening result involves methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The step-by-step laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly difficult, thus increasing result reliability.
  • Shows historical data: It demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", these actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
