Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Big Island, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our company specializes in hair analysis and provides facilities across the nation capable of performing this test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for testing. These assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to other specific requirements.

In recent times, drug testing strategies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts favor a hair test over traditional urine screenings. Hair analyses are utilized by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A primary advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, achieved through an observed collection, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures long-term consumption patterns by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal sample size for initial testing and confirmation. For Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG), supplementary tests, or panels beyond ten, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair only, while body hair includes other types (such as facial and armpit hair).

Process Overview

Four key stages make up the laboratory processing of a test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any needed data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drug presence. While it is an economical approach for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive result must be verified to be legally credible. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive require a follow-up confirmation.

For presumptive positives identified in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a challenging technique.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeline: Hair testing can identify drug use over 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Cheating a hair test is notoriously difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical use: It can outline drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect new use: Drugs are not detectable in hair until about 5-7 days after use.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug detection methods in Big Island, VA, hair follicle assessments have clear advantages over traditional urine screenings. The heightened detection accuracy makes them preferable for employers seeking thorough assessments.

Compared to standard urine tests, hair evaluations present a longer window for identifying substance use and deliver more reliable results. In situations where consistency and dependability are essential, hair testing proves superior, offering a more complete perspective on an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle analyses in Big Island, VA, excel in revealing drug use over prolonged durations, up to 90 days. This comprehensive detection window enables employers to gain deeper insights into an individual's substance history.

Unlike other methods, hair testing sheds light on long-term substance use patterns, providing employers with the information needed to determine the best candidates. Such extensive detection ensures a clearer view of an individual's lifestyle and choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
