Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance screenings in Blue Ridge Shores, Virginia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing has a focused expertise in hair analysis, with centers across cities in the U.S. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is needed on the scalp or elsewhere for sampling. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized substances.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for substance screening. It’s being favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are employed by entities with strict no-drug-use policies, offering detection over a longer window, up to 90 days, with supervised collection eliminating manipulation. However, urine tests remain effective for recent usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a historical record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and tests over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used instead. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps involved in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within the lab system. Tasks include checking that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to generally dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be valid legally. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a second confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging testing methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples deemed presumptive positive are washed as needed prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical usage data: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
