Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Brentsville, Virginia. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert, with facilities across all cities nationwide fully equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for most tests. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this method over standard urine tests. Employers with strict zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation favor hair tests. Their primary advantage is a significantly extended detection period of up to 90 days. These tests are conducted under observation and are extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method available.

What it is, How it works

Considered an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing serves as a robust approach. Within the strands of growing hair, biomarkers are caught, providing a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 90-day detection span for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, it resists being tampered with, and it is convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal amount for testing and validation. If examining EtG, including additional aspects, or conducting tests over 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of the material. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair not be present, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When head hair is mentioned, it is exclusively referring to scalp hair. All other hair forms, such as facial or axillary, are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The primary four stages in processing a test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing phase, bringing a specimen into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) for tracking, and completes any extra data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening conducts an initial brief assessment for illegal substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most cases, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any samples flagged as possibly positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample suggests positive results at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in other testing methods like urine or saliva, which is why hair analysis is the most challenging method to perform.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug exams can identify drug consumption for up to three months, unlike urine tests that have a briefer window.
  • Difficulty to subvert: Cheating on a hair drug exam is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • History of usage: It reveals a usage pattern over time rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5 to 7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are generally more costly than other testing modalities.
  • Variability in findings: Variables like hair color and growth disparities can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brentsville, VA, hair follicle testing holds several advantages over traditional urine tests. One key benefit is its superior detection accuracy, providing a more reliable account of substance use. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated and have a shorter detection window, hair testing offers consistent and accurate results that can detect drug use over a longer period.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers a unique advantage in Brentsville, VA, with its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This longer observation period provides employers with a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. It captures patterns of drug use more effectively than urine tests that only account for recent use, allowing for more informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Brentsville, VA, hair follicle tests are renowned for their resilience against tampering. Unlike urine tests, which are subject to adulteration, hair tests offer a tamper-resistant method. The collection process is observed, reducing the risk of sample manipulation and delivering reliable results that withstand scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
