Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Brownsburg, Virginia. For those in need of a hair alcohol or drug test, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with testing facilities across the country ready to carry out the required tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be sampled. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists increasingly favor hair tests over urine tests. This is especially true for organizations with stringent drug use policies. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, which can trace drug usage up to 90 days with observed collection, making it highly secure. However, urine tests remain the best option for detecting recent use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol intake over a span of up to 90 days. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for examination and verification. For EtG, supplementary analyses, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we refer to head hair, we imply scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab's system. This procedure ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although it is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples suspected of being positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspected positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a reduced window.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is nearly impossible to undermine a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It can indicate a drug use trend over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors such as hair color and unique hair growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Even though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing, hair follicle assessments surpass urine tests in Brownsburg, VA. Hair testing offers more accurate results and boasts superior reliability. The extended detection window and resistance to tampering significantly reduce error margins, providing clarity for employers making crucial decisions on substance use detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
