Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Callaghan, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to destination. Whether it's for hair or alcohol testing, we offer specialized hair tests with nationwide testing centers available in all cities. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body, our tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent approach in substance detection. Preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, this method replaces the conventional urine test. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation committees favor hair follicle tests for their extended detection capability—90 days observation, nearly tamper-proof, and simply collected. However, they're less effective for short-term detection, where urine tests prevail for recent substance use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. Collected close to the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easily collected, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

An ideal hair sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment with around 200 strands (equal to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair for optimal screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those extending beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. Here, head hair implies scalp hair solely, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure involved in the laboratory analysis of drug test results is comprised of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses ensuring correct sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial prompt analysis for abused drugs. While Screening serves as an economical measure to eliminate drug use in most samples, positive results require confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample return presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine, oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the frequent reference to "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
