Located in Captains Cove, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in this domain ensures reliable testing nationwide. We provide hair testing centers in all cities, allowing tests to be conducted efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, although body hair can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, with various custom options available.

Recently, hair follicle testing has seen increased adoption for drug testing requirements. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit organizations with stringent drug use policies by offering a 90-day detection capability, an observed collection process, and minimal risk of tampering. However, for drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is simple to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair implies scalp hair specifically, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result include four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This process includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be deemed valid in legal scenarios. Any samples with a presumptively positive result from Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to cheat a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests in Captains Cove, VA for its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests that might miss longer-term exposure, hair testing provides a more comprehensive picture of an individual’s drug use history. This method ensures that random tests over extended periods yield consistent and dependable results, offering peace of mind to employers.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Captains Cove, VA, captures drug use history for up to 90 days. By analyzing hair samples, employers can get detailed insights into an employee's substance use history. This long-term detection capability is invaluable for substantiating claims related to drug-free workplace policies, providing a broad view beyond recent activities.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Significantly reducing the chances of sample adulteration, hair follicle tests in Captains Cove, VA, present a robust solution for reliable results. The nature of hair testing makes it nearly impossible to tamper with, offering a testing method where the integrity of the sample remains intact. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
