Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Chatmoss, Virginia. Should you require hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in this arena, with facilities located throughout the country capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or bodily hair is sufficient. Hair screening can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for personalized testing needs.

Over recent times, the shift towards using hair follicle tests for drug detection has been notable. This approach is preferred by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and probationary supervision rely on these tests. A primary advantage includes an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, an observed collection procedure, and a difficult-to-manipulate nature. Nonetheless, urine screening remains the go-to for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft, providing a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples cut near the scalp offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch clip of roughly 200 hairs (approximating the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, the same quantity of body hair may be used. Here, head hair specifies scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

Drug test results are processed through four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's initial processing within a lab system. This involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any necessary data entry without an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While economical for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample identified as presumptively positive during Screening requires further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is gathered from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests' shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is incredibly tough, ensuring more precise results.
  • Retrospective data: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become measurable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests often incur greater expenses compared to other testing tactics.
  • Variabilities in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Chatmoss, VA, hair follicle testing demonstrates clear advantages over urine testing. Higher accuracy in detection and increased reliability set hair tests apart. By capturing a broader timeframe of drug usage, hair tests outshine traditional methods. With its benefits, hair testing provides a comprehensive solution for effective drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Chatmoss, VA, offers a substantial advantage, detecting drug use up to 90 days back. This capability provides employers with a detailed perspective of an individual's substance history, assisting in making informed decisions about potential hires or employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
