Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cherry Hill, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair assessments and have nationwide testing centers ready to assist. To conduct a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, whether from your head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailor-made testing solutions.

The trend of utilizing hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now favor hair tests over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict drug policies and probation monitoring due to their ability to detect drug use over a 90-day span. While nearly impossible to tamper with, urine tests remain more reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for recognizing the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and drug intake by incorporating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Hair samples collected directly from the scalp can offer a detection period that spans up to nearly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, will produce 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal sample for both initial screening and confirmation. For tests related to EtG, additional panels, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, the equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Body hair, on the other hand, refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial inclusion of a sample within a laboratory’s system, which encompasses ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. As a cost-efficient method, Screening helps exclude drug usage in the bulk of samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation for court validity. Presumptively positive samples during Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positivity undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug utilization for a duration of up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that possess a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent incidents of use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
