Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Cleveland, Virginia. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities across all major cities nationwide to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or other body parts is usually necessary. This method detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, and allows for tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for this test over traditional urine-based ones. Hair follicle tests serve businesses enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation, with their main advantage being an extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days, making it almost impossible to falsify results in observed collections. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The recognition of hair testing as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption has increased. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. Collecting hair near the scalp offers a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is easy, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG supplements, and/or tests above 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the hair sample. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When speaking of head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair areas (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory framework. This involves ensuring the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data not included within an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial assessment for abuse drugs. While it offers a cost-efficient method to disregard drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for court submissions. Samples deemed presumptive positives in Screening require further substantiation.

Upon obtaining a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation follows any positive screening outcomes using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Necessary presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing reveals drug consumption over a span extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which identify shorter spans.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to manipulate, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Offers insight into a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Variations in results: Aspects such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite being often labeled "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Cleveland, VA, the former stands out due to superior detection accuracy. Hair tests offer a much longer window for uncovering drug history, thus assuring more reliable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
