In Commonwealth, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you require hair testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this service, with facilities in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have surged in usage for substance screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now often favor hair testing over traditional urine assessments. This method is particularly adopted by zero-tolerance employers, legal authorities, and probation cases. A key advantage is its extended 90-day detection, making it tamper-resistant, although urine tests remain superior for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term records of alcohol and drug presence by incorporating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair may reflect drug and alcohol use over an approximate 3-month span. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) gathered closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a parallel quantity of body hair may be sourced. Reference to head hair implies solely scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This stage ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, the generation of a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic custody trail.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-friendly method to negate drug presence in most samples, a positive indication necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Samples that appear presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Whenever a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing as the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive Screening outcomes are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Every presumptive positive sample is cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete processing cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days back, unlike urine exams which have a brief detection span.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: Provides a pattern of drug introduction over a time frame, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Attributes such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
