Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings throughout Courtland, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol tests. Specializing in hair assessments, we feature testing sites in every city across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, we require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, the favored approach for drug assessments increasingly involves hair follicle examinations. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are now opting for hair screenings over traditional urine tests. They’re indispensable for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationary monitoring. The principal advantage is its extended detection span of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for detecting recent usage within five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

The application of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a record keeper for alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. Collecting hair near the scalp can reveal exposure to alcohol and other substances for an approximate timeline of three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, roughly 200 strands or the size of a #2 pencil, taken from the area nearest to the scalp, typically supplies 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and confirmation. In cases involving EtG, additional testing, or more than a 10-panel screen, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen's weight. Should scalp hair not be viable, an equivalent amount of body hair is an acceptable substitute. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The comprehensive laboratory method for processing a drug test comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step initiates the process by integrating a sample into the laboratory's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase performs a preliminary examination for drug presence. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive indication requires confirmation to uphold in judicial proceedings. Samples that screen positively at this stage necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening remains the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory process encompassing Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a markedly shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Exhibits historical usage: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: A timeframe of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to manifest within hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are commonly costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself examines the hair strand as opposed to the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
