Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Covesville, Virginia. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test utilizing hair samples, our experts specialize in this method, with facilities available nationwide for your convenience. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is typically sufficient for testing. Hair samples can be tested for various substances, including alcohol/ETG, or customized for specific needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted as an efficient method for substance detection. Organizations such as employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. The key benefit lies in its extended detection period, which can identify drug use up to 90 days prior. This method involves direct observation during sample collection, making it extremely challenging to tamper with. Despite its advantages, urine testing remains more precise for detecting very recent drug use, typically within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair allows for an extended historical overview of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use information spanning up to around a 3-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal example for screening and confirming. For EtG assessments, supplemental tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unusable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab analysis of a drug test finding are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the initial handling of a specimen within a laboratory's system. This consists of checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial expedited examination for substances of abuse. Screening, while economical for ruling out drug usage in most cases, requires a positive screen to be substantiated for legal admissibility. Any samples appearing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lesser concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Positive screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples get washed prior to confirmation as dictated by necessity. The entire laboratory method, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analyses:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection range.
  • Challenge to defraud: Cheating a hair drug test is extraordinarily difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Delivers historic data: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over a timeline, not solely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally bear higher costs compared to other drug test options.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
