Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Crosspointe, Virginia. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in these assessments and have centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with various customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies, probation, and legal monitoring due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. Collected under supervision, hair tests are nearly immune to manipulation. However, for recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent means for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of substances, as biomarkers are ensnared in the strands' structure. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month timeline for detecting substances like alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab processing for acquiring drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation actions.

If a sample is potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing more challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can monitor use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are tough to exploit, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks past usage: It reveals a timeline of drug behavior over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
