Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dante, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with testing centers across all cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are often opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is employed by zero-tolerance employers, the courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window, which typically lasts up to 90 days, involves a monitored collection process, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and examinations above 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. To ensure precision, we suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types such as facial, underarm, etc.

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the lab is composed of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a specimen within the laboratory's system. This step includes confirming that the sample is sealed and shipped securely, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not automated by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial, rapid assessment for drug use. While Screening is a cost-saving method to eliminate drug use from most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, substances are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples considered presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection scope.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Delivers long-term patterns: It offers insights into drug use trends over time rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms urine testing in Dante, VA, by offering superior accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests detect more recent drug use, hair tests provide a longer detection timeframe.

Employers prefer hair tests for their near-impossible evasion. Hair testing captures comprehensive drug usage history, providing clarity that urine tests can miss.

Extended Detection Window

In Dante, VA, hair follicle testing allows for an extended detection period, identifying drug usage up to 90 days prior. This generous window offers employers a thorough understanding of an individual's drug history.

This long-term detection is invaluable for assessing an applicant’s or employee's substance habits, aiding in informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Dante, VA, offers a tamper-resistant method, significantly decreasing the potential for sample alteration. This robustness ensures trustworthy and conclusive results.

Compared to other methods, hair testing's resistance to manipulation provides confidence in the integrity of the results, crucial for legal and professional decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
