Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Deerfield, Virginia. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair testing, with testing centers available in every city throughout the nation to facilitate hair tests. Typically, individuals need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for testing. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle drug testing. This shift sees more employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts demanding hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Such tests are favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation offices. A notable advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, under observed conditions, making evasion extremely challenging. However, when assessing drug use within the most recent five-day span, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When cut near the scalp, it offers approximately a 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We propose using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. If scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab system initially. This includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a quick preliminary drug check. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample that tests positive initially in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations far lower than those in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive from Screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that appear positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, falls under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug usage patterns up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on hair drug tests is challenging, ensuring more credible outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: Displays drug use trends over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Misses recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the actual procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing against urine testing in Deerfield, VA, the former offers distinct advantages. Hair tests boast superior detection accuracy and are regarded for their reliability in providing definitive results. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers a more extensive detection window, making it the preferred method for many organizations and professionals.

Extended Detection Window

This feature provides employers with a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, allowing for better and more informed recruitment and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests greatly minimizes the risk of sample manipulation in Deerfield, VA. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
