Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in DeWitt, Virginia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing and has testing facilities in cities across the nation capable of conducting a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other specific options.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse specialists favor hair testing over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and those on probation. The key advantage includes a significantly longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, and nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. Collected near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal alcohol and drug usage over a period of up to about three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in laboratory testing of drug samples include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and shipped accurately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that isn't part of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive result from Screening needs court-admissible confirmation. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples presumed positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed for confirming positive screening results. Samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing reveals drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, yielding more accurate results.
  • Provides usage history: It can exhibit drug use trends over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair coloration and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", what is actually tested is the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
