Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Dulles Town Center, Virginia. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we excel in hair analysis, with facilities available in every U.S. city for such tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can typically be tested. These examinations can uncover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other tailored hair testing needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing methods have increasingly become prevalent in identifying substance use. Organizations, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs favor this method for its primary advantage: an extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, and the nearly tamper-proof nature of observed sample collection. However, urine tests remain more precise for drug usage detected within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have been increasingly recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to assess the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be procured. In reference to head hair, only scalp hair is implied. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of lab testing to determine a drug test outcome involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. It encompasses checking that the sample is sealed and conveyed adequately, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not catered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial test for drug presence. Although Screening is an efficient method to negate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are leached from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive cases are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assays can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Tough to deceive: It is quite tough to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical data: It can outline a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just the recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variances in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle test", the analysis itself investigates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Dulles Town Center, VA revolves around its unmatched detection accuracy and dependability. Hair tests surpass traditional urine exams by covering a broader detection timeline. Their resistance to tampering ensures the results are legitimate, providing a reliable measure for employers and agencies implementing drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
