Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Dungannon, Virginia. If a hair or alcohol test is required, we focus on hair testing, offering centers in every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is necessary for most tests. Hair analyses can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or additional hair testing customization.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle drug screening is favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and probationers. Its key advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and offering high resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting substance use. Hair contains a chronological record of alcohol and drug usages through the integration of biomarkers into the hair's growing strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, it’s relatively resistant to tampering, and it's easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of about 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extensive tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any necessary data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Despite Screening's cost-efficiency in ruling out drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples appearing positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of any positive test results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to tamper: Cheating a hair test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can track substance use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term “hair follicle tests” is commonly used, yet the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle itself under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
