Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ebony, Virginia. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, we have facilities in all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, drug testing has increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. This method suits employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term drug and alcohol data by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, it offers up to approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, comparatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weight measurement. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the sample's initial entry into the laboratory’s process. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid drug detection check. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means of excluding drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require an additional, confirmatory test.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is then taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical data: It delivers a record of drug use over time, unlike data reflecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
