Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing caters to needs in Enon, Virginia. If a hair or alcohol test is required, they excel in this service, with facilities spanning cities nationwide that can conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing more often involves hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, or probation cases. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, observed collections, and strong resistance to cheating. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat tamper-proof, and easily transported.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will result in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional screens, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair are specifically about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases in lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of samples into the lab’s system. This stage involves ensuring the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary check for abusive substances. While it is an economical way to rule out substance use for most samples, positive results require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample flags as presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other ways (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • High reliability: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological drug use data: Offers a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing types.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
