Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Esmont, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has notably increased in recent years, often preferred over standard urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Entities like zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation supervisors favor hair tests for their extended detection period—typically up to 90 days—and their resistance to tampering, although urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. If obtained near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use information for up to three months. The collection process is easy, it's relatively tamper-proof, and it can be shipped effortlessly.

A 1.5-inch cut of about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, up to 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When talking about head hair, it signifies scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning requires the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process involves confirming the sample's seal and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy to exclude drug use in most samples, positive screenings must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples suspected of being positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmations.

If a sample is suspected of being positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are drawn from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's very challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It gives a timeline of drug usage over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs are typically detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
