Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fair Lakes, VA. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is well-versed in hair testing, with centers Nationwide for conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. For many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, hair drug tests have replaced standard urine tests. They are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and individuals on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection span, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation and resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a compelling resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equal quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s infrastructure. This process involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening offers an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Samples exhibiting presumptive positives in Screening are obligated to undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than those found in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Fair Lakes, VA

Hair follicle tests provide a superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. While urine tests offer short-term drug use detection, hair analysis extends the window, uncovering substance use patterns over months. Their higher reliability helps in forming comprehensive insights.

Employers benefit from the enhanced credibility of hair tests. Unlike urine samples, hair samples are collected under stringent protocols, reducing the chance of sample tampering. This makes hair testing a preferred choice for long-term drug monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
