Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive testing services using hair samples in Falling Spring, Virginia. If you require drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, we specialize in this modality and provide it at testing locations nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, usually collected from the head or body. Tests can screen for various substances including drugs and alcohol, with customizable options available.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for detecting drug use. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly opt for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, the justice system, and probation officers. One of the key benefits of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, making it reliable despite being harder to manipulate. However, urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, offering a long-term history of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen measuring 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair exclusively denote scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The major laboratory processing phases in determining a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary task of inputting a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and also completing additional data input that isn't included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court use. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and is readied for Extraction. In Extraction, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before the confirmation process as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct benefits over urine tests in Falling Spring, VA. Superior detection accuracy is a primary advantage, with hair tests providing reliable results over a longer period. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are difficult to adulterate, reducing the risk of tampering. This makes hair follicle testing the method of choice for employers and legal settings that require precise and reliable drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

In Falling Spring, VA, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing provides significant advantages. This method traces drug use up to 90 days back, offering employers a comprehensive insight into an employee's substance use history. Such a long-term view is invaluable for gauging consistent drug use, which urine tests, limited to shorter detection spans, cannot provide.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Falling Spring, VA, offer a tamper-resistant solution to drug screening. The method's design makes it nearly impossible to cheat, as altering hair samples is significantly harder than altering urine samples. This ensures more dependable results, giving employers and courts confidence in the validity of the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
