Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ferrum, Virginia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screen, our specialty is hair testing. We operate centers throughout all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Generally, hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches long from the scalp, or body hair may be used. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer personalized testing solutions.

In the past few years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in various testing protocols. Multiple entities such as employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over conventional urine samples. They're crucial for companies with strict drug-free policies, judicial matters, or individuals under probation terms. The main advantage is an extended detection window, up to 90 days, done through monitored collection, making it nearly foolproof. Conversely, urine tests are ideal for identifying recent drug usage, specifically within a span of 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample processing within a lab's system, which includes verifying the sample's proper seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be viable in court. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resilient to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ferrum, VA, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests provide an extended detection window, crucial for uncovering long-term substance use patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
