In Five Mile Fork, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol analysis, our centers are situated nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for these evaluations, which can include testing for drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction for drug evaluations. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring this method over traditional urine tests due to its lengthy detection timeframe, extending up to 90 days. This test, which offers minimal chances for manipulation, is favored in zero-tolerance settings. Nevertheless, for recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine testing remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now perceived as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance use by enclosing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol usage up to an approximate three-month period. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A hair sample around 1.5 inches in length from approximately 200 strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will amount to 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. If no scalp hair is accessible, a comparable volume of body hair might be used. Note that head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair refers to every other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift examination for illicit substances. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening demand a subsequent verification.

If a sample is flagged as positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, hair releases drugs at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use span up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a much shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical usage data: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
