Accredited Drug Testing brings comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations to Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair analysis and boast facilities in every city nationwide to carry out such tests. You generally need between 1.5 and 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing preferences.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug assessment methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning towards hair drug tests instead of traditional urine screenings. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and individuals on probation find them especially beneficial. These tests offer a remarkably longer detection timeline than urine tests, covering drug intake for up to 90 days, gathered under strict supervision, and nearly free from tampering. However, for recent (5-day) drug use detection, urine tests remain the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When clipped near the root, hair can reveal substance use for a period of up to around three months. Hair is easy to acquire, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and exams exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. Measuring the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. The term "head hair" refers only to hair from the scalp, while "body hair" includes all other types of hair (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This step verifies correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any extra information not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a quick, initial assessment for substance abuse. While it offers a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result during Screening must be substantiated to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening must undergo subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to evade: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug habits over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
