Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fries, Virginia. If you require a hair alcohol or drug screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this service, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, suffices. Hair analysis can reveal drug, alcohol/ETG use, or can be tailored for specific needs.

Of late, hair follicle testing has become a more common component of drug testing protocols. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug assessments over standard urine samples. Hair analyses are preferred by entities enforcing strict drug-free mandates. The key advantage is the extended detection timeframe, usually stretching to 90 days, and the difficulty of tampering during supervised collection. For recent drug usage, within five days, urine tests maintain higher precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair presents up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, slightly challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, randomly assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid analysis for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally admissible. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for preparation for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost concerns: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Residents and employers in Fries, VA find hair follicle testing far superior to traditional urine tests. It offers enhanced detection accuracy, capable of identifying a wider range of substances. With its intricate detection capabilities, hair testing goes beyond surface-level screening, delivering results that depict a clearer substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
