Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in George Mason, Virginia. When a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our centers nationwide, including in every city, are equipped to handle such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be tested. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are being used more frequently in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over regular urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary contexts find these tests invaluable. Hair tests offer a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and provide results that are hard to tamper with, though urine tests remain most effective for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size), close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in lab processing of a drug test sample are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Samples that are initially positive in Screening need additional confirmation tests.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive findings from the screening phase is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty in tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can demonstrate a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In George Mason, VA, hair follicle testing has significant advantages over conventional urine testing. Its superior detection accuracy offers a profound advantage, spotting substance use over an extended timeframe. While urine tests focus on recent use, hair tests reveal substance history, assisting in comprehensive employee evaluations.

Besides, hair follicle tests minimize the risk of sample tampering and fake results. Their stringent collection process contrasts with urine tests, ensuring unquestionable reliability and adding an extra layer of assurance in drug testing protocols.

Extended Detection Window

One major benefit of hair follicle tests in George Mason, VA, is their extended detection window. This testing method can track drug use for up to 90 days, offering employers in-depth insight into an individual's past substance use. This long detection period is unmatched when compared to more conventional methods.

With this broader time frame, organizations are equipped to make well-informed decisions concerning potential and current employees, helping to maintain a drug-free workplace effectively while understanding drug use trends.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In George Mason, VA, hair follicle testing stands out due to its tamper-resistant nature. Designing such tests to reduce sample adulteration ensures the integrity of the results. Compared to urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair testing provides foolproof results.

The observed collection process makes it virtually impossible for subjects to alter the sample, offering credible and indisputable results that organizations can trust to reflect true substance use patterns without question.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
