Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in South Hill, Virginia. For those needing drug or alcohol tests through hair samples, our expertise lies in this domain and we operate testing centers in cities across the nation that can conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly used as a method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer this test over the traditional urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation services use hair follicle tests. The significant advantage of these tests is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, which is collected securely and is difficult to manipulate. However, for drug use screening within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, providing an extended record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample with a length of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100 mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150 mg of the specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair; "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug usage in most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be valid in a legal scenario. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is gathered for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technology. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The integrity of hair drug tests is high, making them hard to manipulate and results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It reflects a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
