Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Glen Wilton, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with centers in all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body, which can be utilized. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often use hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended drug use detection period, typically up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a valuable method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair encases biomarkers within its growing fibers, capturing a long-term record of substance exposure. When cut near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to gather, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (about #2 pencil width) collected near the scalp will yield 100mg, the preferred amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, it's advisable to use 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, body hair can serve as an alternative. Here, scalp hair solely refers to head hair, whereas body hair includes other types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test processing in the lab consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage where a sample is logged into a lab's system. This step confirms the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation to check for drugs of abuse. While it efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive is necessary for legal acceptance. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than in alternate methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. At need, all presumptively positive hair samples are washed prior to confirmation. The entire procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection durations.
  • Cheating difficulty: It is highly challenging to counterfeit a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals past consumption: It offers a historical pattern of drug use over a longer term, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Individual differences, such as hair color and growth rate, can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Glen Wilton, VA. Hair testing offers superior detection capabilities compared to traditional urine tests. It boasts a longer detection window, pinpointing substance use accurately. This reliability makes it the preferred choice in many settings, ensuring that employers and authorities get a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug history.

This extended detection period is invaluable for employers seeking to understand an employee's or potential hire's long-term behavior. In industries where safety and reliability are paramount, such comprehensive testing is crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
