Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Gloucester Courthouse, Virginia. For anyone requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing offers expert hair testing, with facilities across cities Nationwide that conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for most tests. Results can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing needs.

Over the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted toward hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by organizations with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. This test's key advantage is its extended detection window, covering drug use up to 90 days, while ensuring nearly foolproof collection under direct supervision. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the emerging hair strand, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances. When obtained near the scalp, hair can furnish up to about a 3-month detection interval for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (analogous to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. With respect to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps implicated in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the first processing phase of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not available in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen mandates verification to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a following confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive during the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other processes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing accuracy of the results.
  • Yields historical information: It can demonstrate a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
