Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Goldvein, Virginia. Whether needing a drug or alcohol evaluation via hair, our expertise lies in hair testing. With testing sites across every city nationwide, hair tests can be readily facilitated. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or from the body suffices. These assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug assessments has been more routine in drug testing procedures. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair drug assessments over urine tests. Entities with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation programs utilize hair assessments. Their primary appeal is an extended detection period, often up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection process and reducing cheating risks. Yet, for recent drug activities within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term archive for alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the evolving hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch cut of about 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional options, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be acquired. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This comprises ensuring that the sample was secured and sent accurately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening comprises a quick preliminary assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is an economical way to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be allowable in a legal setting. Samples that presumptively screen positive require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, trace amounts of drugs are extracted from hair, at far lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug testing is one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation, and authorization to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can find drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which offer a reduced detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Depicts past usage data: Provides patterns of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Costly: Hair drug evaluations are usually pricier compared to other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests in Goldvein, VA, hair testing stands out with superior detection capabilities. Unlike the traditional urine tests, hair testing covers a broader detection window. This allows employers to have a deeper understanding of an individual's substance history, highlighting the test's accuracy and reliability.

Hair tests are less invasive, reducing the discomfort associated with urine sample collection. Moreover, this testing method offers more robust evidence of long-term substance use, ensuring that the true substance use patterns of individuals do not go unnoticed.

Extended Detection Window

In Goldvein, VA, the hair follicle test is known for its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, it can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, providing a complete picture. This extensive period gives employers a thorough perspective on an individual's substance use history, enabling better decision-making.

The prolonged detection capability of hair follicle tests is invaluable for organizations ensuring workplace safety. By spanning nearly three months, this method significantly outperforms others that offer only short-term insight.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
