Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug tests using hair follicles in Hallwood, Virginia. Whether you require tests for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis. With centers across cities Nationwide, a hair sample from your head or body can be utilized if it’s 1.5 to 2 inches long. This method suits drug, alcohol/ETG, or personalized testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methods. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer this test over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals on probation often rely on hair tests. The main advantage is its extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it highly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for recent use, particularly within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers. When procured near the scalp, the sample can indicate a history of up to three months regarding alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands, comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil, will yield 100mg, which is optimal for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jewelry scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount from body hair can be gathered. Reference to head hair pertains only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of determining a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab's system, involving the verification of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any additional data entry overlooked by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial assessment for drugs. Although it provides a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, any positive findings must be affirmed for legal purposes. Samples with presumptive positive readings during Screening necessitate further verification.

Presumptive positive samples require more hair to be extracted for further analysis. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivism undergo washing before the confirmation stage. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover shorter durations.
  • Hard to adulterate: It is tough to tamper with a hair drug test, lending to more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It reveals drug consumption patterns over time, beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Ineffectual for recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are usually costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the method evaluates the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
